MHHS explained: what market-wide half-hourly settlement means for your business
Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement is moving every meter in Great Britain to half-hourly settlement. Here are the key dates, the new MSA, ADS and SDS roles, and a…

On the Firth of Clyde, Ayr is South Ayrshire's main shopping and administrative centre, with council offices, University Hospital Ayr, a University of the West of Scotland campus and Ayr Racecourse. Tourism, hospitality and golf draw visitors along the coast, and the harbour still handles commercial cargo. Just to the north, the area around Glasgow Prestwick Airport is home to an aerospace and engineering cluster, while farms and food producers fill the Ayrshire countryside.
Whether you run retail units, visitor attractions, hospitality venues and care homes, a half-hourly bill rewards knowing exactly when your site uses power. The same number of kWh can cost noticeably more if it lands in the network’s busiest hours, or if your reserved capacity is bigger than you need.
Ayr is in the South Scotland distribution area run by SP Energy Networks. If your site is supplied from that network, the bottom line of the MPAN on your bill starts with 18.
Network charges on a half-hourly bill depend on when you use power. For this network the weekday red band is 16:30–19:30. Moving even part of your flexible load – charging, pumping, batch processes – out of that window lowers the DUoS cost.
Your network operator also agrees your site’s maximum supply, the Agreed Supply Capacity (ASC) in kVA. You pay a daily charge for every kVA whether you use it or not, and excess capacity charges if you go over. If you are adding machinery, EV chargers or heat pumps, an increase is requested from SP Energy Networks.
We work for you, not for a supplier. In practice that means four things:
That includes industrial, commercial and public sites around Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Heathfield Industrial Estate and Ayr Harbour, as well as single shops and offices in the town centre.
We explain every option in plain English, show the figures from your own half-hourly data and tell you our fee, so the decision is always yours.
Under MHHS, the industry is settling every meter on half-hourly data by May 2027. That makes accurate meter data and well-chosen contracts more valuable for businesses in Ayr – and makes peak-time use more visible in the prices suppliers quote. Our guide to understanding MHHS explains what to check.
A short review now saves trouble later: check for estimated reads on recent bills, find out who your metering and data agents are, and read how your contract treats industry and settlement changes before you sign the next one.
The quickest start is a recent bill. We check it against your half-hourly data, ask suppliers to quote like for like and show you the options side by side. Request a free quote or call 07565 147 170.

SP Energy Networks runs the local distribution network in Ayr (South Scotland area, distributor ID 18). It sets the DUoS time bands and capacity charges on half-hourly bills, and handles requests to change your Agreed Supply Capacity.
In the South Scotland area the red band runs 16:30–19:30, Monday to Friday, according to the network operator’s charging statement. Electricity used then carries the highest network charges, so moving flexible loads out of that window can lower costs.
If your site’s maximum demand goes over 100 kW in any half hour, it must be half-hourly metered and settled. Smaller sites are also moving to half-hourly settlement under MHHS by May 2027. If the top line of your MPAN starts with 00, you are already half-hourly.
