MHHS explained: what market-wide half-hourly settlement means for your business
Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement is moving every meter in Great Britain to half-hourly settlement. Here are the key dates, the new MSA, ADS and SDS roles, and a…
Specialist half-hourly electricity support for large and multi-site organisations, from flexible procurement and risk management to portfolio reporting and MHHS at scale.
For large organisations, half-hourly electricity is a significant cost and a significant risk. Portfolios can include dozens or hundreds of MPANs, high-voltage connections, CT-metered sites and complex contract structures. Getting procurement, billing and data right across all of them takes time and specialist knowledge.
We work alongside finance, procurement, estates and energy teams to manage half-hourly electricity across large portfolios, with clear reporting and independent advice.
Large users often buy energy through flexible or basket contracts, purchasing in tranches over time instead of fixing on a single day. That spreads market risk, but it needs a clear strategy: how much to buy, when, at what trigger prices and who signs off.
We help you set and review that strategy, compare flexible offers from a range of UK suppliers and report on positions as they build. For organisations that prefer certainty, we also compare fixed and pass-through structures. Whichever route you take, we set out the risks and costs of each structure in plain English so the decision rests on clear information.
High-voltage and CT-metered sites bring their own considerations. Agreed Supply Capacity charges are larger, excess capacity charges can be significant and metering agent contracts are often held directly. Reactive power is common on sites with large motors, compressors and refrigeration. When power factor falls below about 0.95, reactive power charges apply, and power factor correction equipment can reduce them. Your half-hourly bills and data show whether reactive power charges are worth tackling at each site.
Organisations in eligible sectors with a Climate Change Agreement pay a reduced rate of Climate Change Levy, which on electricity is 8% of the main rate. From 1 April 2026 the main rate is 0.801p per kWh. With many sites, it is easy for a CCA site to be billed at the wrong rate, so we check CCL across the portfolio as part of bill validation.
Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement is moving every meter in Great Britain to half-hourly settlement. Elexon's plan sets Milestone 14, all market participants qualified, for 28 October 2026 and a full migration deadline of May 2027. For a large portfolio, the practical risks are incorrect MPAN data, non-communicating meters, lapsed agent appointments and contract clauses that allow new costs to be passed through. We check each of these across every site and give you a single, prioritised action list.
Half-hourly data for every site lets you compare like with like: base load, out-of-hours use, red-band DUoS exposure, capacity headroom and cost per site. We produce regular reports for finance and estates teams in plain English, and we can tailor them to your internal reporting needs.
If you are responsible for electricity across a large estate, we can help you see it clearly and manage it with confidence. Request a free review or call 07565 147 170 to talk through your portfolio.
Flexible or basket procurement means buying energy in tranches over time instead of fixing the whole volume on a single day. It spreads market risk, but it needs a clear strategy covering how much to buy, when and who signs off. It is typical for large users. We help set the strategy and compare flexible offers.
Every meter is being moved to half-hourly settlement, with a full migration deadline of May 2027 under Elexon's plan. For large portfolios the practical risks are incorrect MPAN data, non-communicating meters, lapsed agent appointments and contract terms that allow new costs to be passed through. We check each site and provide a prioritised action list.
Yes. Sites with a Climate Change Agreement should pay a reduced CCL rate on electricity, which is 8% of the main rate. Across a large portfolio it is easy for a site to be billed at the wrong rate. We check CCL as part of our bill validation and raise any errors with the supplier.
Send us a recent bill. We will check every charge, compare contracts from UK suppliers and tell you plainly whether you can pay less. Free, and no obligation.
