A World Heritage city, Bath runs largely on tourism, hospitality and retail, with hotels, restaurants, the Roman Baths and Thermae Bath Spa drawing visitors all year. Two universities, the Royal United Hospital and an office market in creative, technology and professional services add steady demand. Listed buildings limit large industrial sites in the centre, so manufacturing and distribution tend to sit on the edge of the city and at Bath Business Park near Peasedown St John.
Whether you run visitor attractions, hospitality venues, retail units and schools, a half-hourly bill rewards knowing exactly when your site uses power. The same number of kWh can cost noticeably more if it lands in the network’s busiest hours, or if your reserved capacity is bigger than you need.
Most sites in Bath take their supply from National Grid Electricity Distribution’s South West network. On your bill, that shows up as an MPAN whose bottom line starts with 22.
The network operator sets Distribution Use of System (DUoS) charges in time bands. In this area the red band – the most expensive – runs 17:00–19:00 on weekdays, according to its published charging statement. Amber covers the rest of the working day and green covers nights and weekends.
Half-hourly sites also pay a capacity charge for their Agreed Supply Capacity. If it was set years ago it may no longer match how the site runs – too high and you pay for capacity you never use, too low and excess capacity charges appear. Changes go through National Grid Electricity Distribution.
Most of our work with local businesses falls into four jobs:
Whether your site is around Bath Quays and Bath Business Park or elsewhere in Bath, the process is the same and it starts with a bill.
Every recommendation comes with the numbers behind it, drawn from your own half-hourly data, so you can see why it makes sense before you agree to anything.
Under MHHS, the industry is settling every meter on half-hourly data by May 2027. That makes accurate meter data and well-chosen contracts more valuable for businesses in Bath – and makes peak-time use more visible in the prices suppliers quote. Our guide to understanding MHHS explains what to check.
Three quick checks are worth doing now: that your meter is sending actual readings rather than estimates, that your metering and data service contracts are current, and that your supply contract explains how industry and settlement changes are passed on.
The quickest start is a recent bill. We check it against your half-hourly data, ask suppliers to quote like for like and show you the options side by side. Request a free quote or call 07565 147 170.

National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the local distribution network in Bath (South West area, distributor ID 22). It sets the DUoS time bands and capacity charges on half-hourly bills, and handles requests to change your Agreed Supply Capacity.
In the South West area the red band runs 17:00–19:00, Monday to Friday, according to the network operator’s charging statement. Electricity used then carries the highest network charges, so moving flexible loads out of that window can lower costs.
If your site’s maximum demand goes over 100 kW in any half hour, it must be half-hourly metered and settled. Smaller sites are also moving to half-hourly settlement under MHHS by May 2027. If the top line of your MPAN starts with 00, you are already half-hourly.
