MHHS explained: what market-wide half-hourly settlement means for your business
Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement is moving every meter in Great Britain to half-hourly settlement. Here are the key dates, the new MSA, ADS and SDS roles, and a…

As the UK's second city, Birmingham has a large professional and financial services sector in the Colmore Business District, along with major shopping at the Bullring and Grand Central. Advanced manufacturing, automotive supply chains and metal trades run across the city. Several universities, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, food production, logistics and the workshops of the Jewellery Quarter add to one of the most varied economies in the country.
For offices, factories, retail units and schools, the timing of electricity use matters as much as the amount. On a half-hourly supply every 30 minutes is metered and priced, so a site that runs machinery, chillers or heating through the late-afternoon peak pays very differently from one that does most of its work overnight.
Birmingham is in the West Midlands distribution area run by National Grid Electricity Distribution. If your site is supplied from that network, the bottom line of the MPAN on your bill starts with 14.
DUoS unit charges here follow red, amber and green time bands. The red band runs 16:00–19:00, Monday to Friday, and every kWh used in it carries the highest network charge. Green, overnight and at weekends, is the cheapest.
Half-hourly sites also pay a capacity charge for their Agreed Supply Capacity. If it was set years ago it may no longer match how the site runs – too high and you pay for capacity you never use, too low and excess capacity charges appear. Changes go through National Grid Electricity Distribution.
Most of our work with local businesses falls into four jobs:
We work with businesses right across Birmingham, including sites on and around Colmore Business District, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham Business Park and Tyseley Energy Park.
We explain every option in plain English, show the figures from your own half-hourly data and tell you our fee, so the decision is always yours.
Every electricity meter in Great Britain is moving to half-hourly settlement under Elexon’s MHHS programme. Suppliers began migrating meters on 22 October 2025 and the deadline is May 2027. For Birmingham businesses that were not half-hourly before, prices will increasingly reflect when you use power, not just how much. Our guide to understanding MHHS explains what to check.
A short review now saves trouble later: check for estimated reads on recent bills, find out who your metering and data agents are, and read how your contract treats industry and settlement changes before you sign the next one.
Send us a recent bill or tell us your postcode and contract end date. We will check your charges, compare offers from UK suppliers and come back with plain-English options, including our fee. Call 07565 147 170 or ask for a free quote.

National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the local distribution network in Birmingham (West Midlands area, distributor ID 14). It sets the DUoS time bands and capacity charges on half-hourly bills, and handles requests to change your Agreed Supply Capacity.
In the West Midlands area the red band runs 16:00–19:00, Monday to Friday, according to the network operator’s charging statement. Electricity used then carries the highest network charges, so moving flexible loads out of that window can lower costs.
If your site’s maximum demand goes over 100 kW in any half hour, it must be half-hourly metered and settled. Smaller sites are also moving to half-hourly settlement under MHHS by May 2027. If the top line of your MPAN starts with 00, you are already half-hourly.
